Anja Bohnhof (*1974) studied Visual Communication and Fine Arts at Bauhaus University Weimar after completing photographic training. Since 2004, she has worked as a visual artist. From 2006 to 2014, she taught Photography & Editorial Practice at the University of Applied Sciences Cologne. She also works as a freelance editor and author, including for "EIKON – International Magazine for Photography and Media Art".
Her artistic practice is grounded in photography and combines documentary research with conceptual and visual approaches. Her works explore questions of history, memory, cultural identity, and the ways in which social and political narratives are inscribed in places and images. Alongside exhibitions, she has developed and published several photographic books and long-term book projects.
Her work has been exhibited and published internationally and has received numerous grants and awards. Her photographs and projects are represented in prominent collections, including the Collection of Contemporary Art of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Art Collection of the German Bundestag in Berlin.
Following a decade of exploring themes of recent German history, Bohnhof began developing a sustained body of work on India in 2009. Since then, she has developed several long-term photographic and book projects exploring historical figures, places, and cultural narratives.
Her long-term project "Tracking Gandhi", completed in 2019, is a photographic book and exhibition project tracing significant places and sites connected to the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. The project was exhibited at the National Gandhi Museum in New Delhi and is permanently presented at the Museum of the Mahatma Gandhi Mission in Aurangabad.
In 2015, she received the "Gisela Bonn Prize" from the Indian Cultural Council in New Delhi and the German-Indian Society e.V. for her works on India, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the deepening of Indo-German relations.
