Omschrijving

Canterbury continues my exploration of landscape through subtraction and tonal reduction. The image is developed by removing paint, so light and form appear through incision rather than addition. Value contrasts organise the composition; colour plays only a minimal role. From nearby the surface reads as a dense network of scratches and marks, while from a distance a clear spatial structure emerges: trees in the foreground, an opening in the forest, and a receding countryside beyond. This movement between surface fragmentation and spatial coherence is central to my practice. The vertical cuts of the trunks both construct and disturb the image, preventing it from becoming purely illustrative. The female figure, seen from the back, functions less as a portrait than as a point of orientation within the space. She anchors the viewer’s position without directing interpretation. The work is therefore not a depiction of a specific site near Canterbury, but a study of how depth, presence and attention arise through reduction and controlled ambiguity.
