Ai Hashimoto is a multidisciplinary Japanese artist based in the Hague, the Netherlands.
Her paintings, works on paper, sculptures, installations and performances are always surprising.
The starting point for her work is always a story. They are stories of her own creation, in which ritual theory and biology play an important role. Not surprisingly, she has an academic background in biology and anthropology. She studied bio-resource science in Japan, social anthropology in Belgium and fine arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, the Netherlands. She incorporates her diverse academic knowledge and interests into her artwork.
One of her most recognisable works is the series 'Unfamiliar Landscape'.
It is a story inspired by the Japanese tsunami. It is the story of the birth of new life after the world was destroyed by the 'pink tsunami'. She painted images of new life in acrylic. She has expressed the image of new life and new world in paintings, installations and performances.
