The giant oarfish got its second name because it likes to swim with shoals of herring, standing out between them with its “crown”. It swims almost vertically and grows up to 11 meters. A huge head sticking out from the water made a great impression on sensitive sailors and gave rise to many legends about sea dragons.
Luckily, it's almost inedible, so it's mostly caught for pretty photoshoots, with lots of men in their underwear (fishermen’s equipment, apparenty) holding the fish together with happy smiles on their faces. The face of the fish expresses royal majesty and humility. So there this painting praises it!
