Ka Yee Li is a Dutch visual artist & performer who grew up in her parents' restaurant, amidst the Chinese take-away and the snack bar. She continued the family tradition of helping her parents in the restaurant.
If there were few or no customers, she mainly drew faces and flower-like shapes on the beer mats and the food wrapping paper.
During her fashion study at the Willem de Kooning Academy she’s had taken many self-portraits instead of photographing her own designs. After her graduation she decided to continue in fine arts and performances.
Her background as fashion designer finally inspired her to use the sewing machine to 'draw' in her portraits.
In her melancholic urge for nostalgia, she transforms memories into perfection: she casually supplements the past with new memoirs.
